Tuesday morning we were tearing off pieces of croissant and using them to mop up melted French butter. Judi sighed.
"What?" I asked.
"We could be having Pop Tarts right now."
This was Dawn Beach day, and the sky could have been a dome of blue jade. You can just walk from the resort onto the beach. The water was calm. We brought two inflatable floats made by Swim Ways, and let me tell you those things are great. I went snorkeling for a half hour. The snorkeling is good there. I took pictures with a disposable camera. We got toasted. Toasted, I tell you, toasted. While we were having lunch a flood of people arrived, in shorts, with cameras. Judi said there's a cruise ship in today.
Then we went into Philipsburg (and there were in fact two cruise ships in the harbor), ostensibly to shop for liquor and cigarettes to take home. So why, Judi, why did we stop in every jewelry shop we passed (which for practical purposes is every shop on Front Street)? After making our purchases, Judi waited with them on Front Street for me to get the car and bring it around. While she was waiting, a guy offered to sell her pot.
On the way to Philipsburg, while driving on the main road, a bull in an adjacent pasture completed what may have been a long-planned effort to break through the stone wall enclosing his pasture. He came plunging down the slope (naturally there was a slope -- nothing here is level) and onto the road. I avoided him by swerving into the oncoming lane. Fortunately, nothing was oncoming. Driving here is always an adventure.
Today I felt sad that this trip will end soon. And this is only day four of eight. On the one hand, it's a sign that I'm having a good time, that I feel this way so early in the trip. On the other hand, it's a bummer that I'm going to have this sadness handing over me for half the trip. I wish I could live here.
Lunch
So what about lunch? Lunch was at Busby's again. It was convenient. We both had cheeseburgers -- beach food -- and they were very, very good. The meat had a lot of flavor -- I don't know why. Judi said it may be best cheeseburger she's ever had. I won't go quite that far, but it was good.
